Obey Always

Obedience is a foundational principle in the Christian life. It is the practical expression of faith and love toward God.

To obey “always” means to live a life governed by God’s Word, regardless of circumstances, presence of others, or convenience.

Philippians 2:12, encourages us to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” recognizing that obedience is not just about external actions but also internal commitment.

Obedience is not mere duty—it is a response to God’s grace.

Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

Our obedience demonstrates our love and trust in Him.

Philippians 2:12
“Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;” (NKJV)
Paul writes here to the church in Philippi, urging them to maintain their obedience regardless of his presence. Their faithfulness in his absence would show the genuineness of their commitment.

Key points to consider:
• Consistency: Obedience should not be selective or dependent on supervision. True obedience is consistent in every situation.
• Personal Responsibility: The phrase “work out your own salvation” highlights personal responsibility. Salvation is a gift, but living it out requires active obedience.
• Fear and Trembling: This phrase emphasizes reverence and seriousness in obeying God. It’s not about being scared but about honoring God’s authority deeply.
Obedience is a lifelong practice, and it deepens our relationship with God as we depend on His Spirit to guide us.

(2 Timothy 4:2)
“Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” (NKJV)
Timothy is instructed to faithfully proclaim God’s Word under all circumstances. The Word is the foundation for understanding what obedience looks like.
• Preach the Word: Obedience begins with knowing God’s commands. The Word illumines the way.
• Be ready in season and out of season: Obedience is continuous, not limited to convenient times.
• Convince, rebuke, exhort: The Word convicts us of sin, corrects deviations, and encourages perseverance.
• Longsuffering and teaching: Patience and sound teaching help us become mature in obedience.
To obey God, we must immerse ourselves in the Scriptures, allowing the truth to transform us. The Word empowers us to obey not begrudgingly but joyfully.

Obeying Always in Daily Life
What does it mean to “obey always” practically?
1. Obedience in private and public: Our obedience must not depend on who is watching. God sees all, and our integrity is measured by our obedience in the unseen moments.
2. Obedience despite feelings: Often, our feelings or circumstances do not align with God’s commands. Obedience requires trusting God’s goodness even when it’s hard.
3. Obedience with joy and reverence: It is possible to obey with a joyful heart because God’s commands are for our good.
4. Obedience leading to growth: Consistent obedience shapes character and deepens faith.
5. Obedience under the guidance of the Holy Spirit: We are not left alone. The Spirit empowers, guides, and strengthens us in obedience.

Obedience is a daily choice—to listen, respond, and act according to God’s will.

Challenges and Encouragements in Obedience
Obedience can be difficult. Sometimes the path God calls us to walk conflicts with popular opinion or personal desires.

Challenges:
• Temptation to conform to the world
• Fear of rejection or persecution
• Misunderstanding God’s will or commands

Encouragements:
• God’s promises of presence and empowerment (Isaiah 41:10, John 14:16)
• The example of Jesus, who perfectly obeyed the Father (Philippians 2:8)
• The reward of obedience: peace, joy, and eternal life (Psalm 119:1-2, John 14:21)
Paul’s encouragement to the Philippians is a call to steadfastness and faithfulness in obedience, trusting God even when circumstances are difficult.
