Obey Boldly

Obedience to God requires boldness — a confident, courageous, and unwavering commitment to follow God’s command regardless of opposition or risk.

• Acts 4:13, 19-20, 29
• Philippians 1:20

This teaching will help believers understand why boldness is essential in obedience to God, how the early church demonstrated bold obedience, and how we too can obey God boldly today.

1. Understanding Bold Obedience

What does it mean to obey boldly?
Bold obedience means acting on God’s commands confidently and courageously, even in the face of intimidation, opposition, or threat.
Context of Acts 4:
Peter and John had just healed a lame man (Acts 3), which drew the attention and opposition of religious leaders.

Despite being threatened and commanded not to speak in Jesus’ name, they choose to obey God rather than men – boldly speaking the Gospel.

The same Spirit that empowered the early apostles to boldly obey God is available to us. Christian obedience is not timid or secretive but manifests in courageous testimony and life choices.

Acts 4:19-20 (NKJ)
“But Peter and John answered and said to them, ‘Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.’”

The apostles place God’s command above human authority.

They do not negotiate obedience depending on threats or consequences but stand firm in conviction.

“We cannot but speak” underscores the intrinsic urgency and necessity to obey God; it is non-negotiable.

Application:
Bold obedience rejects fear of man and uncertainty about consequences.
It is about recognizing God as the ultimate authority and the source of one’s allegiance.

Acts 4:13 (NKJ)
“Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.”
Boldness is noticed by others, especially when it comes unexpectedly from unlikely people.

Their boldness was attributed to their intimate relationship with Jesus.

Bold obedience flows from being “with Jesus” — daily fellowship, discipleship, and dependence on Him.
Acts 4:29 (NKJ)
“Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word.”

Prayer for Boldness:
Boldness is a gift and an answer to prayer.

Even in threats and opposition, the early believers asked God for boldness to continue obeying in word and deed.

Application:
We must seek God’s help to be bold, especially when facing opposition in doing His will.

Philippians 1:20 (NKJ)
“According to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.”

Paul’s Example:
Paul longs to obey God and glorify Christ with all boldness in every circumstance, whether living or dying.
Bold obedience transcends comfort zones and fears – it is consistent, fearless, and focused on magnifying Christ.

Bold obedience involves honoring Christ with every action, attitude, and in every situation. It is not conditional on personal safety or approval.

Practical Applications and Discussion:

How can we obey boldly today?
1. Recognize God’s authority over all human powers.
Never prioritize man’s command if it conflicts with God’s.
2. Build intimacy with Jesus.

Boldness comes from being “with Jesus” — reading the Word, prayer, fellowship.

3. Pray continually for boldness.
Ask God, as the apostles did, for courage in proclaiming and living out His word.

4. Be ready to testify from your own experience.

Bold obedience means sharing what God has done in your life, as Peter said, “the things we have seen and heard.”

5. Embrace suffering and challenges for Christ’s sake.

Bold obedience means trusting God even when facing persecution or hardship.

Dialogue Questions:

• What fears or barriers often hinder us from obeying God boldly?

• How can we practically stand firm like Peter and John when confronted by opposition?

• How does a deeper relationship with Jesus empower us to overcome fear?

Obeying God boldly means placing God above all else, rooted in faithful relationship with Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and willing to face opposition with courage and uncompromising conviction. Like Peter, John, and Paul, we are called to proclaim and live the Gospel courageously, knowing that obedience to God yields eternal impact far greater than any earthly consequence.
