In life, we are often faced with choices about who we obey and what commands we follow. Sometimes, the commands of people and the commands of God conflict, and this can create pressure and confusion.
• Acts 5:29 — “We ought to obey God rather than men.”
• 1 Samuel 15:24 — Saul’s failure to obey God fully because he was afraid of people.
We will see what it means to obey God unambiguously — clearly, completely, without second-guessing or fear.
The Meaning of “Obey Unambiguously”
When we say “obey unambiguously,” we mean obeying in a clear and full way, without doubts, excuses, or half-measures. It is being straightforward and firm in following God’s commands.
The Bible teaches us that God’s commands are perfect and must be followed faithfully. People sometimes ask us to do things that are against God’s will. It is in these moments that we must stand firm.
• Acts 5:29 shows an example of courage and conviction when Peter and the apostles said:
“We ought to obey God rather than men.”
They chose to obey God even though the authorities ordered them not to preach about Jesus.
This is a powerful principle to live by: no matter what people say, obey God first and foremost.
Your obedience should be clear, firm, and without confusion.
The Danger of Partial Obedience – Learning from Saul
1 Samuel 15 gives us a warning through King Saul’s story. Saul was given a clear command from God through the prophet Samuel—to completely destroy the Amalekites and everything that belonged to them.
Instead of full obedience, Saul spared King Agag and kept some of the best animals.
When confronted, Saul admitted:
“I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD… because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.” (1 Samuel 15:24).
Saul disobeyed because he was afraid of what people would think or say. His partial obedience was disobedience in God’s eyes.
This shows us the danger of disobeying or obeying only when it is easy. God requires total obedience, not partial.
Why Is it Important to Obey God Above People
God is our ultimate authority. He created us and knows what is best for us.
Human opinions and commands can be flawed. People make mistakes, but God is perfect.
We will face pressure from family, friends, leaders, and society to compromise or disobey God’s laws.
Obeying God first brings blessings and peace, even if it means going against popular opinion.
Disobeying God leads to brokenness, guilt, and judgment.
The apostles in Acts chose God over men and were willing to suffer for it because they knew God’s commands are eternal and perfect. Similarly, we must learn to bow to God’s authority in all situations.
How to Practice Unambiguous Obedience Today
1. Know God’s Word
Regularly read and study the Bible so you understand what God commands.
2. Pray for Strength
Ask God to give you boldness to obey Him, especially when you feel pressured.
3. Be Courageous in Difficult Situations
When someone asks you to do something that goes against God’s commands, be firm in your “No” and explain why you obey God first.
4. Avoid Compromise
Don’t think obedience is flexible. Half-hearted obedience is disobedience.
5. Surround Yourself with Like-minded Believers
Being part of a community that honors God helps you stay strong.
The Rewards and Peace of Obedience
Obedience to God brings many blessings:
• Peace in your heart, knowing you are doing what is right.
• God’s favor and guidance in your life.
• Protection from the consequences of sin.
• Eternal rewards because God sees and honors your faithfulness.
Even when obeying God means standing alone, it is worth it. The apostles’ boldness in obeying God rather than men brought the powerful growth of the early church.
Will you choose to obey God unambiguously, no matter the cost?
